February 9th the Department of Defense made an announcement regarding allowing women to serve in more positions that are closer to combat. Is this a real change or a policy shift to adjust the current policy to align with reality?
I submit that it may be a transparent change which in essence is no change at all. A policy change to make it official what women are already doing does not say much. However the fact that law makers and officials are willing to put pen to paper is to be applauded.
The Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno would like to see the Army use the full talents of women. That is a step in the right direction of putting dents, cracks, and holes in the brass ceiling.
I am still unsure about my personal feelings regarding women in combat but this issues does not simply revolve around combat. It is about using assets to their fullest potential. I feel that as a whole women in the military are not reaching their potential. Even though this change may be transparent, it is a change. There will come a time in the near future where women will be on much more equal footing with their male counterparts.
