Time for something new

In 2009 I signed up for the Disney Half Marathon. Prior to that I’d never really done any sort of running races. I’m not sure why I decided to start with a half marathon. Most people begin their running with a 5k, maybe a 10k. Not me I jumped right.

That race ended up being the first of many marathons, half marathons, 10 milers, 10 ks, 5 milers, 5 ks, and mud runs. Last February an injury sidelined me from running. So I’ve been spending most of my time in the water- surfing and paddling (which I LOVE). Next weekend I get to combine my love of racing with my love of paddling.

A few weeks ago I read a blog about someone who tried doing a SUP race. I commented about how fun that looked and she said that there was a race in Providence. Of course I had to check it out, and after a week or so of hemming and hawing, trying to decide if I would sign up, I finally committed.

Since I’ve never done an event like this, I have the same nervousness I did before my first road race. I have no idea what to expect. But I knew that I would regret not trying. At least I learned one thing from the Disney Marathon; I don’t have to start with such a long distance. This time I signed up for the short course.

  1. Yay! I’m so glad to hear you’re going to do it! I can’t wait to hear how it goes.

My best advice is to just worry about your own race. I image you (like me) have a shorter SUP board that can be used for surfing also, so right off the bat you’re at a bit of a disadvantage to those who come with 14′ racing boards! Just keep paddling and have fun!

    1. Thanks I will definitely take that approach. I’ve been paddling and surfing my 9′ board and for the race I am going to take our 11’6 surftech so the extra length will be a treat to paddle.

I’ll definitely let you know how it goes.

And thanks for the inspiration to try a SUP race.

    2. The race was today. I hung pretty well on my board and placed 2nd in the surfboard division. It was pretty fun. I was spent though. And the course was great.

      Thanks for the motivation.
