I was flipping through channels and stopped at the movie “Philadelphia.” I hadn’t seen the movie in years, so I watched. In the movie Tom Hanks plays a lawyer who is fired from his job because he has AIDS. Hanks hires Denzel Washington to sue for wrongful termination. But the movie deals with more issues than just wrongful termination; major themes are discrimination, fear, and doing the right thing.
The movie came out in 1997. But as I watched it struck me that the script is just as relevant today, just change the players. People still fear what they don’t know or understand. This fear causes people to discriminate and use terms like us and them. And while we all strive to do the right thing, we see over and over again, the right thing is often the hard thing because it is unpopular and challenges people to face their fear.
My hope is one day we can pack away this script. But for now, it is a story we will continue to see.
